Qingdao is located at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, with the Yellow Sea in the south and Jiaozhou Bay in the west. A beautiful tourist city, cool in summer, it makes an ideal summer resort. Fortunately a small fishing village, Qingdao was occupied by German marauders by force in 1889 and put to use as a sea port. In the First World War, it was seized by the Japanese aggressors. Now a port city, it has a population over one million. A tourist city and summer resort, Qingdao features beautiful scenery, unique architecture and a cool, refreshing climate.

The best scenic attraction in Qingdao is Laoshan Mountain featured by weird cocks and precipitous cliffs against high mountains and sea waves. In the mountain stand the Huayan Temple, Taiqing Palace and White Cloud Cave. Other scenic attractions are Lu Xun Park, Sun Yat-sen Park, bathing beach, Museum of Marine Products, landing bridge and Zhanshan Sanatorium. Northeast to Qingdao lies the coastal city Yantai. To the northwest of Yantai is the Zhifu Peninsula in serried mountain heights. It offers the best view of the morning sun rising far out on the sea.

At Dengzhou to the northwest of Yantai there is the famed Penglai Pavilion. People would liken it to ascending a fairyland when they stand in the pavilion and looking out, sometimes with mirage rising on the sea.
Qingdao offers first-class travel service. Major hotels include Huanghai Hotel, Zhanqiao Hotel, Badaguan Hotel, Yingbing Hotel, Overseas Chinese Hotel, Huiquan Wangchao Hotel, Haicheng Hotel, Zhanshan Hotel and Dayang Hotel, all with deluxe guest rooms.

Shell painting, straw articles, drawnwork and lace trimmings are traditional arts and crafts of Qingdao. Sea cucumbers, prawns, abalones and scallop are among the many famous sea foods delicacies special to Qingdao.
