Guiyang is the capital of Guizhou Province, has a population of 950,000. In the Ming Dynasty (1368--1644), it was Xingui County; in the Qing (1644--1911), it was changed to Guizhou County; and in 1930 Guiyang City was set up.
Major scenic attractions include Qianling Hill, Flower Stream, No.1 Beauty Tower, Immortal Cave, etc. Grown to towering ancient trees, Qianling Hill features beautiful scenery, with graceful Qianling Lake at the foot of the hill.

Half way up the the hill sits Towl Washing Pond, where Lu Chunyang, it was said, used to wash his alms-bowl and on the hill top stands Qianling Temple, a Buddhist Centre of Guizhou. Eighteen kilometres southwest of Guiyang is the famous summer resort, Flower Stream, with hills in the rear, graced with water. Most picturesque is the scenery of Banner Pavilion formed of hill mounds and waters of stream in Flower Stream. No.1 Beauty Tower was erected on Diaoao Rock. To the south of the tower is the Temple of Goddess of Mercy, which houses a Thousand-Buddha Pagoda. Wenchang Pavilion, first constructed in the 17th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming (1589), is a three-story pagoda-type tower with nine angles, a structure typical of local architecture. East Hill appears solitarily and loftily. A climb to the top of the hill takes visitors to East Hill Temple, which is fenced by Bronze Drum Hill. Legend has it that on his expedition to the South, Zhuge Liang hid a bronze drum in the hill, hence the name. Underground Park is limestone karst cave, a rocky world formed of stone curtains, bamboo shoots, pillars and flowers. About 120 kilometres southwest of Guiyang resounds magnificent Huangguoshu Waterfall, which can be heard miles away.
Guiyang has regular trains and planes going to Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, and other cities. Maotai spirit and Dong spirit are among China's ten famous spirits. Its lutes and batik are sold well both at home and abroad. Flower Stream Hotel, Gold Bridge Hotel and Guiyang Hotel welcome Chinese and foreign visitors.
