Chongqing is at the juncture of the Yangtze and
Jialing Rivers. the largest city in Southwest China, it has a population of 2.12 million.
In the Qin Dynasty, it was the seat of Bajun Prefecture; in the early Sui
(581--618) and Tang (618--907), the seat of Yuzhou Prefecture and after the Song
(960--1279), it was Chongqing Prefecture and the seat of prefectural government.
Surrounded by rivers on three sides, the city of Chongqing, in the shape of a
peninsula, was built on hills, hence the fame the "Mountain City". |
