Chongqing is at the juncture of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. the largest city in Southwest China, it has a population of 2.12 million.
  In the Qin Dynasty, it was the seat of Bajun Prefecture; in the early Sui (581--618) and Tang (618--907), the seat of Yuzhou Prefecture and after the Song (960--1279), it was Chongqing Prefecture and the seat of prefectural government.
  Surrounded by rivers on three sides, the city of Chongqing, in the shape of a peninsula, was built on hills, hence the fame the "Mountain City".

  Chongqing has many scenic attractions.
  The South Hot Spring, which is known for having a curing effect on skin diseases for its sulfuric content, is surrounded by the Jianwen Peak, Fairy Maiden Cave, Huatan Stream and other tourist spots. The North Spring Park holds the Hot Spring Temple, which is built on high cliffs and towering over deep valleys, a veritable magnificent structure with upturned eaves and a multi-layered roof.

  The Red Cloud Mountain claims the fame of "Lesser Mount Emei", and offers a fine view of the Lion Peak, mountains and rivers around. The Goose Peak Park is known for its plant species and miniature landscape. Red Crag Village is where Zhou Enlai had his office in Chongqing and Mao Zedong was offered temporary abode during the days when peace was negotiated between the Kuomingtang and the Chinese Communist Party in old China.
  At nightfall, when myriads of lights flicker on and off, a most splendid sight is presented by the lights. There is also Baidi (White Emperor) City, first built between the years 9--24 B.C., originally going by the name of Ziyang City.

  For Gongsun Shu set up independent regime and crowned himself as Baidi (or White Emperor) at that time in Sichuan, it then had the name of Baidi City adopted. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Liu Bei died here and upon his death he saw that his orphan be under the care of Zhuge Liang.

  Other tourist attractions include the Shrine of Zhuge Liang, Star Observation Pavilion, and Mingliang Hall. The Three Gorges on the Yangtze River refer to the Jutang, Wu and Xiling gorges. Towering cliffs and peaks amidst mists and clouds, it feasts your eyes when you are sailing down the Yangtze from Chongqing to the Three Gorges. Passenger planes provide air links to other large Chinese cities, including Beijng, Guangzhou, Kunming and Chengdu, in addition to railway transport service to various parts of the country.

  Tourists may have the choice to make a trip by boat on the Yangtze. The main hotels at the service of tourists are the Yuzhou Hotel, Huixianlou Guest House, People's Hotel, Shancheng Hotel, Chongqing Hotel and Zengjiayan Hotel.
