Chengde is 256 kilometres northeast of Beijing. Surrounded by mountains, it is a famous scenic city to the north of the Great Wall.
  Its major tourist attractions are the Chengde Mountain Resort and Eight Outer Temples. Built in the 42nd year of the Kang Xi reign of the Qing (1703), the Chengde Mountain Resort was the former outpalace of Emperor Kang Xi and other Qing rulers of the time. The palace structures along with the temple built in the place show the different styles of architecture by various Chinese nationalities.

  The mountain resort possesses scenery featuring colour, the Eight Outer Temples represent the different features of the culture of the Han, Tibet, Mongolia and other minority nationalities.
  Housed in the Temple of Universal Peace is a huge wooden sculpture of Buddha rare in the world. Weighing 110 tons, it is 22.28 metres high and 15 metres at the waist.
  Xumifushou Temple was originally built as the temporary residence of the Sixth Bainqen Lama when he came paying respects and making an obeisance to Emperor Qian Long for his 70th birthday celebration.
  With a fine gold top and copper tiles, the main hall is in dazzling brilliance.

  Modeled on the Potala Palace in Tibet, the Putuozongcheng Temple was erected by Emperor Qian Long to host notables of the minority people from Mongolia, Qinghai, Xinjiang and Tibet.
  It is the largest ancient imperial garden in China, featuring towers, pavilions, magnificent halls and other decorative structures. From April to October every year is the best period for tourism.
