LUOYANG (June,1997)

Longmen (Dragon's Gate) Grottoes and peonies are the most famous in Luoyang.

The digging and carving of these grottoes began around A.D. 494 when the Northern Wei Dynasty moved its capital to Luoyang.  The statues were engraved in the mountains. Upwards of 100,000 statues have been found in all existing grottoes. It's a grand historical remains. You will be amazed by this wonderful view. You will find that in fact you are just a little point when you face to such a wonderful miracle.

Peonies are one of the famous flowers in China, especially Luoyang peonies are the most beautiful. The Peony Fair will be held every year on April 15 in Luoyang. At that time you will understand why peonies have acclaimed as "King of Flower".

You can go to Shaolin Temple and Baima (White Horse) Temple from Luoyang. It will be one-day journey. Shaolin Temple is very famous for its kung fu. In Chuipu Hall, you will find the exhibition of Shaolin Boxing with statues. The Forest of Pagoda is another famous view too. The famous monks were buried there. Baima Temple is the first Buddhist temple in China which was 1900 years ago.

By the way, you can buy the Tang tricoloured glazed pottery imitations as gifts to your family and friends in Luoyang.

XI'AN (June,1997)

Before travelling to Xi'an, Hua Mountain is recommended to visit. Hua Mountain is called the West High Mountain in China. There are 5 famous high mountains in China, that is: Mountain Heng(north), Mountain Song (middle), Mountain Heng (south), Mountain Tai (east) and Mountain Hua (west).

Mountain Hua is well-known for its preciptousness. Everyone says: "There is only one way in Mountain Hua." It isn't an exaggeration. If you want to climb to the peak, it depends on your strong will and courage. The best time to set out is at night. Before that, you must have a good sleep so that you have energy to begin this journey. Climbing mountain at night is better because you won't feel as hot as in the morning. On the other hand, due to the darkness you won't feel so much scared. Furthermore, probably you have a chance to see the sunrise. The best place to see the sunrise is the East Peak. If you are tired, you can go to a little part of Hua Mountain by the cable car. But the feeling is absolutely different from climbing by yourself. Here, I want to thanks to Luo Cheng and "Monkey Guide" (sorry, I just remember your nick name). Thanks for your help. Without your help, I think I was unable to catch to see the sunrise.

Xi'an is the starting point to the Silk Road. There are numerous ancient cultural remains in Xi'an, including Museum of Qin Terra-Cotta Soldiers and Horses, Tomb of Qun Shi Huang, Tomb of the Yellow Emperor, Qianling, Big and Small Wide Goose Pagodas, Bell Tower, the Forest of Steles, Crouching Dragon Temple and Xi'an Wall...

Qin Terra-Cotta Soldiers and Horses imitations are sold near the museum. I think they are special handicrafts. Unfortunately I couldn't buy a lot because they are too heavy. Moreover, the slippers are another recommendation because they are handicrafts too.

Xi'an is also famed for its local food, the Griddle Cakes in Beef Soup is very tasty. I heard that "Lao Sun Jia" and "Qin Ya Zhai" Restaurants are famous for this food. I ate this food in Qin Ya Zhai Restaurant. It's very interesting because the waitress will give you a cake. Then you must break the cake in many little pieces. Remember, the least pieces, the best taste. After that, you put these little pieces into a bowl. Then the waitress will take this bowl to the kitchen. The chef will cook for you. After a while, you will enjoy tasting this delicious food. Besides the Griddle Cakes in Beef Soup, there is Griddle Cakes in Mutton Soup too.
